1683 Siege of Vienna, Austria - 6 of 10
Opening en slaen der Turken aen t Weener Wald = Ouverture du Grand Bois de Vienne et defaicte des Turqs,Romeyn de Hooghe (1683)In 1683, Nicolaas Visscher II (1649-1702) published a series of ten prints about the Turkish siege of the city of Vienna with the most important pictures of the war. The prints were engraved by Romeyn de Hooghe (1645-1708) after drawings from the Antwerp artist Jacobus Peeters. This is the seventh print from the series. It depicts a decisive moment in the battle when the Turkish troops in the Wienerwald accidentally meet an allied army. The youthful cavalier is meant to be the 21 year old Elector of Bayern. It appears to be a mistake since at that moment in the battle, the Elector had not yet arrived at the battle scene.
