OVER-WINNINGH | van de Stadt | COTCHIN | op de Kust van | MALLABAER, widow of Jacob van Meurs (1682)This news print from the Dutch conquest of the town of Colombo in Ceylon in 1656 was included in the richly illustrated travel journal of Johan Nieuhoff, a worldtraveller from Amsterdam. Nieuhoff accompanied from 1655 to 1658 a delegation of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) to the Emperor of China. After his return he had his journals published. The book was one of the great bestsellers of its time.
